The console’s own way with samples
The console's own way with samples: the sample converter that the disc-era machine ran everything through, with its RATE from 4 kHz to 44.1 kHz and the chip's four predictor pairs (FILTER), which is where that machine's grit came from. Run a clean chip through it and it comes out of that console.
Four to a socket, in order: sound runs through the slots top to bottom. Open the box and every knob is in real units; BYPASS takes it out of the path without losing its settings; the presets are along the top; any knob learns a controller and gets an automation lane.
| Knob | Range | Starts at | Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| RATE | 4000 Hz to 44100 Hz | 22050 Hz | log |
| FILTER | NONE · PAIR 1 · PAIR 2 · PAIR 3 · PAIR 4 | PAIR 2 | steps |
| MIX | 0 to 1 | 1 | linear |
Every box ships with a bank. AS SET is the knobs as you left them; the rest are starting points, each a sound someone wanted often enough to name. Star one and it sits at the front of the bank.
| Preset | RATE | FILTER | MIX |
|---|---|---|---|
| CLEAN 44K | 44100 Hz | NONE | 1 |
| GAME 22K | 22050 Hz | PAIR 2 | 1 |
| LOW 11K | 11025 Hz | PAIR 2 | 1 |
| CRUNCH 8K | 8000 Hz | PAIR 3 | 1 |
| HALF | 22050 Hz | PAIR 2 | 0.5 |
| DIRT 4K | 4000 Hz | PAIR 4 | 1 |
Every box is also a line of the console's language, so a pad or a patch can carry its effects in text. The words are the knobs:
