THE LANGUAGE, FROM THE APP'S OWN /HELP

Press ` in the app and you can type what the knobs do. A sound is a head line and its parts; every chip has its own words; a kit is the same idea with a pad a line; an effect is a line under either. This page is what /help says, topic by topic, as the engine prints it in V1.376, so it is never behind the app.

  op1 tl=22 ar=31 dr=12 sr=3 sl=4 rr=8 mul=1
  op2 tl=0 ar=31 dr=6 sr=2 sl=2 rr=10 mul=1

patch starts an instrument sound and names it. alg is which of the FM algorithms wires the operators up, fb how hard the first one feeds back on itself. Each op line is one operator: tl its level (lower is louder, the chip's own way round), ar dr sr sl rr its envelope, mul its pitch multiple. Change one number, press ⌘Enter, play a note.

THE PATCH LINE

PATCH LINE
alg (0..7) Algorithm 0-7: how the four operators connect. 0-3 chain into one carrier, 4 is two stacks (1>2, 3>4), 7 is four carriers side by side.
fb (0..7) Feedback 0-7: operator 1 modulates itself. 0 is a clean sine, 7 is near noise.
ams (0..3) Amplitude LFO depth 0-3 for operators with am=1.
fms (0..7) Pitch LFO depth 0-7 (vibrato).
level (0..2) Level 0-2: the instrument's own gain on its out (1 = as authored; top-level patches only).
tune (-36..36) Semitones added to every note, fractions allowed (the panel's OCT, SEMI and CENTS).

OPERATOR LINE (op1..op4)
tl (0..127) Total level 0-127: attenuation, 0 is loudest. On a carrier it is volume; on a modulator it is brightness.
ar (0..31) Attack rate 0-31: 31 is instant.
  dr (0..31) Decay rate 0-31 toward the sustain level. Measured -30 dB times: 19 = 65 ms, 17 = 130, 15 = 260, 13 = 520, 11 = 1000.
sr (0..31) Sustain rate 0-31: continued decay after the sustain level is reached. 0 holds forever.
sl (0..15) Sustain level 0-15: where decay ends. 0 is full level (no decay), 15 is silence (decays all the way, use for drums).
rr (0..15) Release rate 0-15 after key-off: 15 is instant.
  mul (0..15) Frequency multiple 0-15: 1 = fundamental, 2 = octave up, 0 = half.
dt (0..7) Detune 0-7: 0 none, 1-3 sharp, 5-7 flat. Two carriers a little detuned make chorus.
rs (0..3) Rate scaling 0-3: envelopes get faster with pitch, like a piano.
am (0..1) 1 = this operator follows the amplitude LFO (see ams).

ring (0..1) 1 = fold this voice's triangle against the voice below it: bells and metal out of two plain tones.

HOME MICRO PARAMETERS
vol (0..15) Level 0-15 when the channel is not following the envelope. The chip's steps are 1.5 dB apart, so its quiet levels stay audible.
env (0..1) 1 = follow the hardware envelope instead of a level. A channel can do one or the other, never both.
shape (8..15) The envelope's shape: 8 a falling saw, 9 down once, 10 a triangle, 11 down and hold high, 12 a rising saw, 13 up and hold, 14 the other triangle, 15 up once.
envperiod (1..65535) The envelope's own period. Small is fast: below about 300 it leaves the shape behind and becomes a tone.
buzz (0..1) 1 = the envelope's period follows the note, so the envelope is the oscillator. This is the buzzer, and it is this chip's bass.
buzzsemis (-36..12) How far under the note the buzz sits. An octave down is the usual place.
noise (0..31) The noise period, shared by every channel: 0 is the brightest hiss, 31 a slow rattle.
voices (1..3) How many of the chip's three channels this patch takes.

/HELP WAVE6

WAVE 6

fx <type> name=value up to two effect lines after the operators, on the instrument's own out (/help fx)
THE WAVETABLE CONSOLE'S CHIP
Six channels, each playing a wave of thirty-two steps that you choose or draw, each with its own left and right. A patch can turn from one wave into another as the note sounds (to= and morph=): that is this chip's filter sweep. Noise lives on the last two channels.
  patch "name" chip=wave6 wave=saw|square|pulse|tri|sine|organ|hollow|bell|drawn|noise [to=<wave> morph=frames] [table=32 steps 0-15] vol= [att= dec= sus= rel=] [pan=] [voices=1-3 spread= detune=] [noise=] [arp=0,4,7 arpspeed=] [vib= vibrate= vibdelay=] [slide= slideframes=]

WAVETABLE PARAMETERS
morph (0..120) Frames the wave takes to turn into the to= wave. 0 = it stays as it is. This chip's filter sweep.
  vol (0..31) Level 0-31, a decibel and a half a step.
att (0..100) Frames up to the level. 0 is instant.
dec (0..200) Frames down to the sustain.
sus (0..31) The level held while the key is down, 0-31.
rel (0..200) Frames out after the key.
pan (-100..100) Where the voice sits: -100 left, 100 right. Every channel on this chip has its own left and right.
spread (0..100) How far apart several voices sit around the pan.
voices (1..3) How many of the chip's six channels this patch takes.
detune (0..99) Cents between them, when there is more than one.
noise (0..31) The noise's pitch when wave=noise: higher is brighter. Noise lives on the last two channels.

/HELP SAMPLER

BPC 60

fx <type> name=value up to two effect lines after the operators, on the instrument's own out (/help fx)
THE SAMPLER
Plays audio you load: a pad plays its sample once (or loops it), an instrument re-speeds one sample across the keys from its root note. Words: sample=<name> start end loop loopstart root reverse choke attack release fit; tune and level are the pad's and patch's own words.
/HELP KICK

A KICK, EXPLAINED

fx <type> name=value up to two effect lines after the operators, on the instrument's own out (/help fx)
A kick is one carrier with a fast pitch drop and a click from its modulator:
  pad 1 "KICK" note=33 pitch=24 pdecay=30 gate=320
    patch alg=4 fb=0
      op1 tl=38 ar=31 dr=22 sl=15 mul=2
      op2 tl=0 ar=31 dr=16 sl=15 rr=13
Longer boom: dr=12 gate=900. Harder click: op1 tl=30 mul=3.
/HELP BASS

A BASS, EXPLAINED

fx <type> name=value up to two effect lines after the operators, on the instrument's own out (/help fx)
The growl bass: op1 hits op2 hard and decays fast, so the note barks then settles.
  patch "growl bass" alg=4 fb=5
    op1 tl=22 ar=31 dr=12 sr=3 sl=4 rr=8 mul=1
    op2 tl=0 ar=31 dr=6 sr=2 sl=2 rr=10 mul=1
More growl: fb=7 or op1 tl=16. Duller: op1 tl=30. Sub: op1 tl=60.
